Giaudrone Middle School comes together for Community and Culture Night
Performance at Giaudrone Community and Culture Night

Music, dance, food and tradition filled Giaudrone Middle School last week as students, families, and community members gathered for Community and Culture Night, an annual celebration highlighting the diverse backgrounds represented throughout the school.

“This special evening celebrates the rich diversity of our school community and brings together students, families, and local partners for an evening of cultural performances, food, activities, and connection,” said Principal Bernice Whitley.

Performances celebrate culture through music and movement

Performances included a Khmer Grand Master martial artist from Cambodia, Giaudrone Middle School Select Band members, the Mount Tahoma Korean Club, GMS Poly Club, the Tacoma Scots Pipe Band, and the Stadium High School Filipino Club.

Alisha Harker, teacher and chair of the Family Involvement Committee, organized the event with support from fellow staff members Bernice Whitley, Lindsey Sheppard, Christopher Berntsen, and Zachary Hill.

Cultural booths offer hands-on experiences for families

Families explored booths representing countries and regions including the Philippines, Korea, Laos, Hawaii, and other Pacific Island cultures. Booths featured traditional clothing, food, artifacts, informational displays and interactive activities.

“At the Korean booth, people tried on traditional Korean clothing - or hanbok - and took Polaroid photos,” said teacher Booyoun Kim. “They also experienced traditional Korean games such as gonggi, ddakji and jegichagi, and sampled dalgona, a popular Korean street snack.”

Food played an important role in sharing culture and connection. The Filipino booth focused on how meals bring families together.

“The Filipino booth was a means to share a little bit of our culture,” said Assistant Principal Ronel Balabat. “While food is important to many cultures, it signifies the importance of family.”

Local organizations and businesses also supported the event by donating prizes and resources to help make the night possible. Donors included the Tacoma Museum of Glass, Tacoma Art Museum, Farrelli’s Pizza, Legendary Doughnuts, The Grand Cinema, Chuck E. Cheese, Ted Brown Music, Seafair, La Ca 38th, Vien Dong Restaurant, M&K Bakery & Deli, and La Huerta International Market.

“We are truly grateful to the community for helping make this event a success,” Whitley said.
